Braley Care Homes was created from a father and son’s passion for quality assisted living in a home-like environment, spawned from their experience in the mental health field.
Chris and Dean Braley opened Braley Care Homes on March 29, 2005. Braley Care Homes expanded into Alzheimer’s, Dementia, and, memory care services in 2008. Chris Braley is the owner and administrator of Braley Care Homes and it remains the only free-standing Alzheimer’s, Dementia, and memory care facility in West Virginia. Our facility was built with dementia care in mind and is the ideal environment for someone with this disease. It is locked 24 hours per day and has a beautiful outdoor courtyard with a pastoral view, which is secure at all times.
Our memory care activities and behavior programming is geared toward meeting each individual’s needs, which helps keep their anxiety level down and reduces the risk of behavior issues.
Chris Braley has a bachelor’s and Master’s degree in social work and is an LICSW (licensed independent clinical social worker). Chris shares, “dementia is not only in my professional life, but also in my personal life. My grandmother and father suffered from dementia, so I know the pain the families go through as they watch helplessly as their love one suffers. Our goal at Braley Care Homes is to tap into each resident’s unique qualities and help bring a calmness to both their life and their family’s life.

I have only great memories of the great care my husband received. Never heard an unkind word to anyone there. This care home facility is wonderful. Thank you, Mr. Braley, for all you do and your staff. God's blessing continue to be with you all.

I’ve worked there and I’ve seen how the residents are treated. Staff love their jobs and you can tell. Owner is great with residents too. They do a wide variety of activities and even a pet dog.

Caring Is Our Business
In the labyrinth of dementia, where memories flicker and fade like distant stars, music becomes a beacon of familiarity and comfort. This transformative power of melodies has sparked a revolution in dementia care, offering a ray of hope amidst the shadows of forgetfulness. From the gentle strumming of a guitar to the soaring crescendo of a symphony, music has emerged as a potent tool to awaken dormant memories, evoke emotions, and nurture connections with loved ones. In this blog series, we delve into the remarkable journey of how music therapy is reshaping the landscape of dementia care, illuminating the path towards holistic well-being for both patients and caregivers alike. Join us as we explore the harmonious intersection of science, art, and compassion, where every note becomes a lifeline in the symphony of dementia care.
In the intricate tapestry of human memory, music possesses a unique thread, capable of weaving through the tangled corridors of the mind and unlocking cherished recollections thought long lost. For individuals navigating the challenging terrain of dementia, where memories often slip like sand through fingers, the transformative potential of music shines brightly. In this exploration, we delve into the profound influence of melodies in dementia care, illuminating the ways in which music can soothe, stimulate, and ultimately harmonize the memories of those on this extraordinary journey.
At the heart of dementia lies a complex interplay of cognitive decline and emotional turmoil. Yet, amid this complexity, music emerges as a beacon of hope, capable of stirring dormant memories and evoking profound emotional responses. Studies have shown that even in advanced stages of dementia, familiar melodies have the power to transport individuals back in time, eliciting smiles, tears, and moments of poignant connection.
Beyond its nostalgic allure, music offers a myriad of therapeutic benefits for individuals with dementia. From reducing anxiety and depression to improving cognitive function and enhancing social interaction, the rhythmic pulse of melodies serves as a holistic remedy for the multifaceted challenges of the condition. Music therapy interventions, tailored to individual preferences and needs, harness the healing power of sound to promote well-being and enrich quality of life.
Central to harnessing the power of music in dementia care is the creation of personalized playlists, curated to resonate with the unique life stories and preferences of each individual. Through a collaborative process involving caregivers, family members, and music therapists, these playlists become more than just a collection of songs; they become a musical journey through time, evoking cherished memories and fostering a sense of identity and belonging.
While recorded music holds its own magic, the experience of live music takes the therapeutic journey to new heights. Whether through intimate concerts, interactive performances, or one-on-one musical interactions, the presence of live musicians amplifies the emotional resonance of music, creating moments of joy, connection, and transcendence for individuals with dementia and their caregivers alike.
In dementia care settings, the integration of music into daily routines holds the potential to transform the environment into a sanctuary of healing and harmony. From morning melodies to bedtime lullabies, incorporating music into activities of daily living cultivates a culture of comfort and engagement, enriching the lives of residents and fostering a sense of community among caregivers.
In the labyrinthine recesses of the human mind, memories lay dormant, waiting to be stirred by the gentle cadence of a familiar melody. For individuals grappling with the challenges of dementia, where memories often seem to slip through the fingers like grains of sand, the therapeutic potential of music shines as a guiding beacon. In this exploration, we delve into the profound influence of music in dementia care, unveiling its ability to unlock memories, evoke emotions, and forge connections that transcend the boundaries of time and cognition.
Amidst the cognitive haze of dementia, music possesses a unique ability to penetrate the fog and unlock treasured memories. Scientific research has shown that familiar melodies have a direct pathway to the emotional centers of the brain, triggering reminiscences of past experiences, relationships, and emotions. Through the rhythmic pulse of music, individuals with dementia find solace, comfort, and moments of clarity amidst the confusion.
Beyond its role in memory recall, music serves as a catalyst for emotional expression and connection in dementia care. Whether through joyful melodies that spark laughter and merriment or poignant ballads that evoke tears and reflection, music provides a safe and therapeutic outlet for individuals to process and communicate their feelings, even when words fail them.
The therapeutic benefits of music extend beyond the realm of emotion to encompass cognitive stimulation and enhancement. Engaging in musical activities such as singing, playing instruments, or rhythmic exercises stimulates various regions of the brain involved in memory, attention, and executive function. Through regular musical engagement, individuals with dementia may experience improvements in cognitive abilities and overall well-being.
Music has a remarkable capacity to transcend the barriers of dementia and forge meaningful connections between individuals, caregivers, and loved ones. Whether through group sing-alongs, intergenerational music sessions, or personalized musical playlists, shared musical experiences create moments of joy, camaraderie, and intimacy that enrich the lives of all involved.
Central to harnessing the therapeutic potential of music in dementia care is the creation of personalized playlists tailored to the individual's preferences and life history. By incorporating familiar songs from key moments and milestones in the person's life, caregivers and music therapists can evoke memories, emotions, and a sense of identity that transcends the limitations of dementia.
In the realm of dementia care, where traditional treatments often fall short, a harmonious alternative emerges: music. As we explore the integration of melodies into dementia treatment plans, we uncover a symphony of therapeutic benefits that extend far beyond mere entertainment. From unlocking memories to stimulating cognition, music offers a melody of hope and healing for those navigating the complexities of dementia.
