Braley Care Homes was created from a father and son’s passion for quality assisted living in a home-like environment, spawned from their experience in the mental health field.
Chris and Dean Braley opened Braley Care Homes on March 29, 2005. Braley Care Homes expanded into Alzheimer’s, Dementia, and, memory care services in 2008. Chris Braley is the owner and administrator of Braley Care Homes and it remains the only free-standing Alzheimer’s, Dementia, and memory care facility in West Virginia. Our facility was built with dementia care in mind and is the ideal environment for someone with this disease. It is locked 24 hours per day and has a beautiful outdoor courtyard with a pastoral view, which is secure at all times.
Our memory care activities and behavior programming is geared toward meeting each individual’s needs, which helps keep their anxiety level down and reduces the risk of behavior issues.
Chris Braley has a bachelor’s and Master’s degree in social work and is an LICSW (licensed independent clinical social worker). Chris shares, “dementia is not only in my professional life, but also in my personal life. My grandmother and father suffered from dementia, so I know the pain the families go through as they watch helplessly as their love one suffers. Our goal at Braley Care Homes is to tap into each resident’s unique qualities and help bring a calmness to both their life and their family’s life.

So let's embark on this journey together and discover the keys to aging gracefully with vibrant mental acuity and clarity.
As we journey through life, aging gracefully is a goal many aspire to achieve. However, as we age, it's natural for our bodies and minds to undergo changes, including those related to memory. For some individuals, these changes may lead to challenges in memory and cognitive function. Nevertheless, there are mindful practices and techniques that can help individuals age gracefully and maintain cognitive vitality. In this guide, we'll explore various strategies and approaches for memory care, empowering individuals to embrace the aging process with mindfulness and resilience.
Understanding Memory and Aging: Before delving into memory care practices, it's essential to understand how memory functions and evolves with age. Memory is a complex cognitive process involving the encoding, storage, and retrieval of information. As we age, certain changes occur in the brain, such as a decrease in the volume of certain brain regions and alterations in neurotransmitter levels, which can affect memory function. It's important to recognize that memory decline is not inevitable with age and can be influenced by various factors, including genetics, lifestyle, and overall health.
Cultivating a Mindful Lifestyle: Mindfulness is the practice of being present in the moment, without judgment. Cultivating mindfulness can have profound benefits for cognitive health and overall well-being, especially as we age. In this chapter, we'll explore mindfulness techniques such as meditation, deep breathing exercises, and mindful movement practices like yoga and tai chi. These practices can help reduce stress, improve concentration, and enhance emotional resilience, all of which contribute to better memory function.
Stimulating Cognitive Engagement: Keeping the mind active and engaged is crucial for maintaining cognitive vitality as we age. This chapter will discuss various activities and exercises that stimulate cognitive function, including brain games, puzzles, and learning new skills or hobbies. Additionally, social engagement plays a significant role in cognitive health, so we'll explore the importance of staying connected with friends, family, and community groups.
Prioritizing Sleep and Rest: Quality sleep is essential for memory consolidation and overall brain health. In this chapter, we'll discuss the importance of establishing healthy sleep habits and routines, such as maintaining a consistent sleep schedule, creating a relaxing bedtime routine, and optimizing the sleep environment. We'll also explore techniques for managing sleep disorders that may arise with age, such as insomnia or sleep apnea.
Nourishing the Body and Brain: A balanced diet rich in nutrients is vital for maintaining cognitive function and overall health as we age. This chapter will provide guidance on choosing nutrient-dense foods that support brain health, such as fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, and healthy fats. We'll also discuss the importance of staying hydrated and incorporating dietary supplements, such as omega-3 fatty acids and antioxidants, into your regimen.
As we age, maintaining cognitive function and memory becomes increasingly important for leading a fulfilling and independent life. While factors such as genetics and lifestyle play significant roles in cognitive health, nutrition also plays a crucial role in fueling our brains and supporting optimal memory function. In this guide, we'll explore the relationship between nutrition and memory, and provide practical tips and strategies for incorporating brain-boosting foods into your diet to support graceful aging.
The brain is a highly complex organ that requires a constant supply of nutrients to function optimally. In this chapter, we'll explore the specific nutrients that are essential for brain health and memory, including omega-3 fatty acids, antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals. We'll also discuss how these nutrients support various aspects of cognitive function, such as memory formation, neurotransmitter synthesis, and neuroplasticity.
Incorporating a variety of nutrient-rich foods into your diet can provide the essential building blocks your brain needs to thrive. This chapter will highlight foods that are particularly beneficial for memory and cognitive function, such as fatty fish rich in omega-3s, berries packed with antioxidants, leafy greens abundant in vitamins and minerals, nuts and seeds for healthy fats, and whole grains for sustained energy. We'll also discuss the role of hydration in brain health and the importance of staying adequately hydrated.
The Mediterranean diet has gained recognition for its numerous health benefits, including its positive effects on brain function and memory. In this chapter, we'll delve into the key components of the Mediterranean diet, such as fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grains, legumes, nuts, olive oil, and moderate amounts of fish and poultry. We'll explore the scientific evidence supporting the cognitive benefits of this dietary pattern and provide practical tips for adopting a Mediterranean-style eating plan.
Mindful eating involves paying attention to the sensory experience of eating and being fully present in the moment. In this chapter, we'll discuss how practicing mindful eating can support memory enhancement by promoting better digestion, reducing stress-related eating, and fostering a greater appreciation for food. We'll explore mindfulness techniques such as mindful breathing, mindful chewing, and mindful savoring, and provide tips for incorporating mindfulness into your daily meals.
As we age, our nutritional needs may change, requiring adjustments to our diet to support brain health and memory. In this chapter, we'll discuss specific nutritional strategies for aging well, such as increasing intake of certain nutrients like vitamin B12 and folate, incorporating more anti-inflammatory foods into your diet, and minimizing consumption of processed foods and added sugars.
