Chris shares, “dementia is not only in my professional life, but also in my personal life. My grandmother and father suffered from dementia, so I know the pain the families go through as they watch helplessly as their love one suffers. Our goal at Braley Care Homes is to tap into each resident’s unique qualities and help bring a calmness to both their life and their family’s life.

Physical Activity for Memory Care Patients | Braley Care

April 28, 20234 min read

Physical activity is known to have a positive impact on overall health and well-being, but it can also play a significant role in memory care. Exercise and physical activity have been shown to improve cognitive function, enhance mood, and boost the overall quality of life in individuals with memory impairment. In this blog, we'll explore how physical activity can help memory care patients and the best types of exercises to consider.

physical activity or exercise for memory care ptients

Let's take a look at how important physical activity is for memory care patients.

First, let's dive into why physical activity is beneficial for memory care patients. Research has shown that exercise can improve blood flow and oxygen to the brain, which in turn supports healthy brain function. This increased blood flow and oxygen supply can also help reduce inflammation, which has been linked to neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's.

Additionally, exercise has been shown to improve memory, attention, and overall cognitive function in individuals with memory impairment. One study found that a regular exercise program resulted in improvements in memory and overall cognitive function in individuals with mild cognitive impairment. Another study showed that aerobic exercise increased the size of the hippocampus, a key brain region involved in memory and learning.

Exercise can also have a positive impact on mood and behavior in individuals with memory impairment. Depression and anxiety are common in people with dementia and Alzheimer's disease, and exercise has been shown to improve symptoms of depression and anxiety. Exercise can also reduce agitation and improve sleep, which can lead to a better overall quality of life for both patients and caregivers.

So, what types of exercise are best for memory care patients?

The answer depends on the individual's physical abilities and personal preferences, but several types of exercise are particularly beneficial for individuals with memory impairment.

Aerobic exercises, such as walking, cycling, or swimming, are a great option for individuals with memory impairment. Aerobic exercise has been shown to improve cardiovascular health, increase blood flow to the brain, and improve overall cognitive function. It's important to start slowly and gradually increase intensity and duration as tolerated.

Strength training is another excellent option for memory care patients. Resistance exercises, such as lifting weights or using resistance bands, can improve muscle strength, balance, and overall physical function. This can lead to increased mobility and independence, which can have a positive impact on the overall quality of life.

Yoga and tai chi are also great options for memory care patients. These gentle, low-impact exercises can improve balance, flexibility, and overall physical function. They also have a calming effect on the mind and body, which can help reduce anxiety and improve overall well-being.

It's important to note that exercise programs for memory care patients should be individualized and tailored to the person's physical abilities and personal preferences. Exercise should be enjoyable and not feel like a chore, as this can lead to resistance and non-compliance.

In addition to structured exercise programs, it's also important to encourage physical activity throughout the day. This can include activities such as gardening, dancing, or taking a walk around the neighborhood. Any type of physical activity can have a positive impact on overall health and well-being.

It's important to consult with a healthcare professional before starting any exercise program, especially for individuals with memory impairment. A healthcare professional can assess the individual's physical abilities and make recommendations for the best types of exercise.

At Braley Care Homes a memory care activities director with input from a multi-disciplinary team designs a daily program for each resident. Our highly trained staff includes nurse aids, AMAPs, Licensed Practical Nurses, Registered Nurses, Licensed Clinical Social Workers, and an activity coordinator.

Our memory care activities and behavior programming is geared toward meeting each individual’s needs, which helps keep their anxiety level down and reduces the risk of behavior issues.

Activities are an essential part of care at Braley Care Homes. An In-depth Social history is done before Admission, So we know how to structure a resident’s activity programming. We use strategies called “step into their reality” “tap into residual memories,” and just plain old “fun” to assist residents through their day.

Activities include:

  • Daily Exercise

  • Individualized activities

  • Volunteer church and community group activities

  • Pet therapy (in-home dog “Sweetie”)

  • Birthdays and holidays celebrated with family gatherings

In conclusion, physical activity can have a significant impact on memory care patients. Exercise can improve cognitive function, enhance mood, and boost the overall quality of life. Aerobic exercise, strength training, yoga, and tai chi are all excellent options to consider. Remember to individualize exercise programs to meet the person's physical abilities and personal preferences, and to consult with a healthcare professional before starting any new exercise program.
