Braley Care Homes was created from a father and son’s passion for quality assisted living in a home-like environment, spawned from their experience in the mental health field.
Chris and Dean Braley opened Braley Care Homes on March 29, 2005. Braley Care Homes expanded into Alzheimer’s, Dementia, and, memory care services in 2008. Chris Braley is the owner and administrator of Braley Care Homes and it remains the only free-standing Alzheimer’s, Dementia, and memory care facility in West Virginia. Our facility was built with dementia care in mind and is the ideal environment for someone with this disease. It is locked 24 hours per day and has a beautiful outdoor courtyard with a pastoral view, which is secure at all times.
Our memory care activities and behavior programming is geared toward meeting each individual’s needs, which helps keep their anxiety level down and reduces the risk of behavior issues.
Chris Braley has a bachelor’s and Master’s degree in social work and is an LICSW (licensed independent clinical social worker). Chris shares, “dementia is not only in my professional life, but also in my personal life. My grandmother and father suffered from dementia, so I know the pain the families go through as they watch helplessly as their love one suffers. Our goal at Braley Care Homes is to tap into each resident’s unique qualities and help bring a calmness to both their life and their family’s life.

Braley Care Homes provide professional care in a
home-like environment, which is crucial to preserving our residents’ dignity and self-worth. We believe this can best be done in smaller environments, rather than large facilities. The home setting is the environment we choose to care for our loved ones. They can surround themselves with pictures and furniture for that complete home feeling. Our intimate, home-like atmosphere allows for individualized care and lasting relationships.

I have only great memories of the great care my husband received. Never heard an unkind word to anyone there. This care home facility is wonderful. Thank you, Mr. Braley, for all you do and your staff. God's blessing continue to be with you all.
Brenda B. L.
I’ve worked there and I’ve seen how the residents are treated. Staff love their jobs and you can tell. Owner is great with residents too. They do a wide variety of activities and even a pet dog.

Caring Is Our Business
In the realm of memory care, where compassion meets innovation, a silent revolution is underway. As the understanding of cognitive disorders like Alzheimer's disease and dementia deepens, so does the quest for more effective therapeutic interventions. "Memory Care Therapy: Innovative Approaches to Healing" explores the cutting-edge strategies and techniques that are reshaping the landscape of memory care.
In this blog series, we will delve into the latest advancements in memory care therapy, ranging from technological marvels to holistic methodologies. From immersive virtual reality experiences that transport patients to distant memories to art therapy sessions that awaken dormant creativity, the spectrum of innovative approaches is as diverse as it is promising.
Join us on a journey through the corridors of memory care facilities, where dedicated professionals and caregivers are harnessing the power of innovation to bring solace, joy, and connection to those navigating the challenges of cognitive decline. Discover how these groundbreaking therapies are not just preserving memories but also nurturing the human spirit.
In the realm of memory care therapy, the senses hold extraordinary power. Each sight, sound, touch, taste, and scent has the potential to unlock a treasure trove of memories, evoking emotions, and fostering connections in individuals with cognitive impairment. Through sensory stimulation, caregivers and therapists can embark on a journey to awaken dormant memories and enrich the lives of those they care for.
The Power of Sight: Visual stimulation plays a crucial role in memory recall. Engaging individuals with familiar photographs, artwork, or nature scenes can transport them to past experiences, sparking reminiscence and conversation. Simple activities like flipping through a photo album or watching a nature documentary can stimulate visual memories, igniting moments of recognition and joy.
The Melody of Sound: Music has a profound ability to transcend barriers and evoke powerful emotions. In memory care therapy, familiar tunes from past eras can transport individuals back in time, triggering memories associated with specific songs or melodies. Whether it's listening to old favorites, singing along to familiar lyrics, or participating in music therapy sessions, the rhythmic cadence of sound can awaken dormant memories and evoke a sense of comfort and belonging.
The Gentle Touch: Human touch is a universal language that communicates care, comfort, and connection. For individuals with cognitive impairment, tactile stimulation through activities like hand massages, gentle hugs, or sensory-rich materials can provide a sense of security and well-being. Incorporating touch into memory care therapy promotes relaxation, reduces agitation, and fosters a deeper connection between caregivers and residents.
Savoring Memories: Taste and smell have a unique ability to evoke vivid memories from the past. Engaging individuals in sensory-rich experiences such as cooking activities, baking familiar recipes, or enjoying favorite foods can stimulate memories associated with taste and smell. From the aroma of freshly baked cookies to the savory flavors of a beloved family recipe, culinary experiences can transport individuals to cherished moments shared with loved ones.
Aromatherapy: Scents have the power to transport us to different times and places, evoking memories and emotions with just a whiff of fragrance. Aromatherapy, the use of essential oils and fragrances, can be a valuable tool in memory care therapy. Lavender, known for its calming properties, can promote relaxation and reduce anxiety, while citrus scents can invigorate the senses and uplift the mood. By incorporating aromatherapy into daily routines, caregivers can create a soothing environment that promotes emotional well-being and enhances the overall quality of life for individuals with cognitive impairment.
In the realm of memory care therapy, there exists a powerful yet often overlooked ally: animals. Pet therapy, also known as animal-assisted therapy, has gained recognition for its profound impact on individuals living with cognitive decline. In this exploration of "Pet Therapy: Pawsitive Connections," we delve into the transformative effects of interactions between therapy animals and residents in memory care settings.
There's something inherently comforting about the presence of animals. Their unconditional love, nonverbal communication, and calming demeanor create an environment of trust and safety. In memory care facilities, where individuals may experience feelings of confusion, anxiety, and isolation, the presence of therapy animals can provide a source of solace and companionship.
One of the remarkable aspects of pet therapy is its ability to elicit profound emotional responses. As residents interact with therapy animals—whether it's petting a soft fur coat, sharing a gentle gaze, or engaging in playful activities—a range of emotions is stirred. For individuals living with dementia or Alzheimer's, who may struggle to communicate verbally, these emotional connections with animals can be particularly meaningful, offering a channel for expression and connection.
Anxiety and agitation are common challenges faced by individuals with cognitive decline. However, studies have shown that interactions with therapy animals can significantly reduce these symptoms. The rhythmic stroking of a therapy dog's fur or the soothing purr of a therapy cat can have a calming effect, promoting relaxation and emotional well-being. In addition, the predictability and routine of pet visits can provide a sense of stability and structure in the lives of memory care residents.
Pet therapy also serves as a catalyst for social engagement within memory care communities. Whether it's sharing stories about beloved pets from the past, participating in group activities with therapy animals, or simply enjoying the presence of furry friends together, these interactions foster connections among residents and staff. Moreover, the presence of therapy animals can break down barriers and facilitate communication, encouraging individuals to engage more fully with their surroundings and peers.
Ultimately, the impact of pet therapy extends beyond the immediate moments of interaction. Research has shown that regular exposure to therapy animals can lead to long-term improvements in quality of life for individuals in memory care. From enhanced mood and decreased feelings of loneliness to improvements in cognitive function and overall well-being, the benefits of "Pawsitive Connections" are far-reaching and enduring.
