Braley Care Homes was created from a father and son’s passion for quality assisted living in a home-like environment, spawned from their experience in the mental health field.
Chris and Dean Braley opened Braley Care Homes on March 29, 2005. Braley Care Homes expanded into Alzheimer’s, Dementia, and, memory care services in 2008. Chris Braley is the owner and administrator of Braley Care Homes and it remains the only free-standing Alzheimer’s, Dementia, and memory care facility in West Virginia. Our facility was built with dementia care in mind and is the ideal environment for someone with this disease. It is locked 24 hours per day and has a beautiful outdoor courtyard with a pastoral view, which is secure at all times.
Our memory care activities and behavior programming is geared toward meeting each individual’s needs, which helps keep their anxiety level down and reduces the risk of behavior issues.
Chris Braley has a bachelor’s and Master’s degree in social work and is an LICSW (licensed independent clinical social worker). Chris shares, “dementia is not only in my professional life, but also in my personal life. My grandmother and father suffered from dementia, so I know the pain the families go through as they watch helplessly as their love one suffers. Our goal at Braley Care Homes is to tap into each resident’s unique qualities and help bring a calmness to both their life and their family’s life.

I have only great memories of the great care my husband received. Never heard an unkind word to anyone there. This care home facility is wonderful. Thank you, Mr. Braley, for all you do and your staff. God's blessing continue to be with you all.
Brenda B. L.
I’ve worked there and I’ve seen how the residents are treated. Staff love their jobs and you can tell. Owner is great with residents too. They do a wide variety of activities and even a pet dog.

Caring Is Our Business
In navigating the complexities of dementia care, a holistic approach is increasingly recognized as invaluable. When loved ones are diagnosed with dementia, families often find themselves thrust into unfamiliar territory, grappling with both emotional and practical challenges. Holistic care emphasizes a comprehensive understanding of the individual's needs, encompassing not just medical treatment but also social, emotional, and spiritual support. At its core, holistic dementia care at home integrates various facets of well-being into a cohesive plan. This approach acknowledges the unique journey of each person living with dementia, tailoring care strategies to promote dignity, comfort, and quality of life. By focusing on enhancing overall wellness and fostering a supportive environment, caregivers and family members can cultivate meaningful connections and alleviate some of the burdens associated with dementia caregiving. Embracing holistic practices not only addresses immediate care needs but also cultivates a nurturing atmosphere that enhances the overall experience for both the individual and their caregivers.
Dementia is a complex condition that affects millions worldwide, impacting cognitive functions, behavior, and daily living abilities. While medical treatments play a crucial role, holistic care approaches offer a comprehensive way to support individuals with dementia, addressing their physical, emotional, social, and spiritual needs. In this guide, we'll explore various facets of holistic care, providing insights and practical tips to enhance the quality of life for dementia patients at home.
Physical health is foundational in dementia care. Encourage regular medical check-ups to monitor overall health and manage any coexisting conditions effectively. Nutrition plays a vital role; ensure a balanced diet rich in brain-boosting nutrients like omega-3 fatty acids, antioxidants, and vitamins. Mealtime routines and adapted utensils can promote independence and enjoyment during meals. Physical activities such as gentle exercises or therapeutic massages can help maintain mobility and reduce agitation.
Emotional well-being is crucial for dementia patients, who may experience confusion, frustration, or anxiety. Establish a calming environment by minimizing noise and distractions. Validate their feelings and provide reassurance during moments of distress. Engage in activities that evoke positive memories, such as listening to favorite music or looking through photo albums. Encourage open communication and support group activities that foster a sense of belonging and social connection.
Cognitive stimulation helps maintain mental function and delay cognitive decline. Engage in activities that challenge memory and problem-solving skills, such as puzzles, word games, or reminiscence therapy. Adapt activities based on the individual's interests and abilities to ensure enjoyment and success. Consider incorporating technology, like memory apps or virtual reality experiences, to provide engaging cognitive exercises.
Social interaction is vital for mental and emotional well-being. Encourage participation in social activities that promote engagement and reduce isolation. Arrange visits from friends, family, or therapy animals, which can provide companionship and emotional support. Consider joining local support groups or community programs tailored for dementia patients and caregivers to share experiences and resources.
Spirituality can provide comfort and meaning for individuals with dementia. Respect their spiritual beliefs and practices, incorporating them into daily routines. Offer opportunities for quiet reflection, prayer, or meditation based on their preferences. Attend religious services or community gatherings that align with their spiritual traditions, fostering a sense of connection and peace.
Proper nutrition plays a crucial role in managing dementia and supporting overall brain health. Individuals with dementia may face challenges in maintaining a healthy diet due to cognitive decline, changes in taste and appetite, and difficulties with meal preparation. In this guide, we'll explore effective nutritional strategies tailored to enhance brain function, promote overall well-being, and improve quality of life for dementia patients.
Nutrient-dense foods provide essential vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants that support brain health. Encourage a diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins (such as fish, poultry, and beans), and healthy fats (like nuts, seeds, and olive oil). These foods provide necessary nutrients while supporting overall health and cognitive function.
Proper hydration is vital for brain function. Ensure dementia patients drink an adequate amount of fluids throughout the day. Offer water, herbal teas, and diluted fruit juices. Monitor hydration levels, especially if the individual has difficulty recognizing thirst cues or managing fluids independently.
Establish a consistent meal schedule with balanced meals to promote stable energy levels and maintain nutritional intake. Include a variety of foods from different food groups in each meal. Offer smaller, frequent meals if appetite is reduced or if large meals are overwhelming.
Adapt meals based on individual preferences, dietary restrictions, and abilities. Consider texture-modified foods for those with swallowing difficulties (dysphagia). Offer familiar foods and flavors to promote enjoyment and encourage eating. Use adaptive utensils or assistive devices if needed.
Certain nutrients are particularly beneficial for brain health. Include foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids (such as salmon, flaxseeds, and walnuts) to support cognitive function. Antioxidant-rich foods like berries, spinach, and dark chocolate help protect against oxidative stress and inflammation in the brain.
Keeping the mind active and engaged through cognitive stimulation activities is crucial for individuals with dementia. These activities not only help maintain cognitive function but also enhance quality of life by promoting mental agility and emotional well-being.
Types of Activities: Include puzzles, word games, memory exercises, and activities that stimulate different cognitive functions like problem-solving and decision-making.
Personalization: Tailor activities to the individual's interests and abilities to ensure engagement and enjoyment.
Consistency: Incorporate cognitive stimulation activities into daily routines to establish a sense of structure and familiarity.
Social Interaction: Engage in group activities or one-on-one sessions to encourage socialization and reduce feelings of isolation.
Adopting holistic approaches to dementia care at home can significantly enhance the quality of life for both patients and their families. By integrating physical, emotional, and social aspects into caregiving routines, individuals with dementia can experience improved well-being and a greater sense of comfort and security in familiar surroundings. Holistic care emphasizes personalized strategies that address the unique needs and preferences of each patient, fostering a supportive environment that promotes dignity and independence.
